Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of musculoskeletal disorders of the masticatory system. These disorders are responsible for the second most common pain complaint seen in the dental office. Therefore, every dentist should have a sound understanding of TMD so that the most appropriate care will be selected for the patient.
Course Objective:
This presentation will define the relationship between occlusion and TMD, as well as describe muscle and joint disorders, along with management strategies for each. The appropriate use of occlusal appliances will be discussed and whether it is appropriate to follow up with dental care.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Jeffrey Okeson is Professor, Division Chief and Director of the Orofacial Pain Program, which he established in 1977. Dr. Okeson has more than 240 publications in the area of occlusion, TM Disorders and orofacial pain in various national and international journals. Dr. Okeson is a very sought after lecturer on the subject of TMD and orofacial pain and has presented more than 1200 invited lectures on the subject of TMD and orofacial pain in all 50 states and in 55 different countries.
